Thought through this line of discourse with someone dear, the other day. My honest take was that there is a thin line separating both of these terms.However, one is clearly acceptable than the other. The acceptable one is the protective lover and definitely not the possessive lover.
I was opined to have contributed in the online discourse that I guess most women kinda like their men to be protective of them, simply because in many ways it shows not only the depth of love such men have for them BUT also how far such men can go to protect their interest from unsuspecting danger.. overlooked by the woman herself.
Remember protection is clearly distinct from possessive and certainly not possessive. Posessive is not good in any shape/form or size or colouring. Well, that's my perspective. Because a possessive man/woman may not even allow you to be close to your own childhood buddies, biological siblings. Yeah baby!
Infact there is a level of phobia associated with being possessive it graduates into a higher plane of obsession .Humans are not objects that should be possessed or purchased. Neither should they be obsessed about. Humans are meant to be related with and shared love with. Humans cannot be a property quantity.
We are all inter-related in diverse ways. Shared love is the order of our lives..
